One of the best beloved sitcoms of the seventies, Good Times holds a special place in the black community as a show that portrayed a black family with heart, humor and a lot of socio-political observations, tackling topics such as women's lib, crooked politicians, alcoholism and child abuse. Set in the projects of Chicago, parents James and Florida (John Amos and Esther Rolle) struggle to raise their three children: eldest son J.J., an aspiring painter; middle child Thelma, brainy and beautiful; and the youngest, Michael, who's pro-black activism earns him the nickname "The Militant Midget". Best friend Willona Woods lives down the hall and keeps the Evans family abreast of all the project gossip and often provides insight into human behavior. The show was a success and featured a variety of actors, some who were famous, some who would be famous (Debbie Allan, Gary Coleman, Louis Gossett Jr, Janet Jackson, Kim Fields and more). Good Times ran into internal problems when the show's producers began to focus more on the popular antics of J.J. Evans ("Dyn-o-mite!") and expanded the buffoonery of his character, moving the show closer to stereotype and further away from the structure that Esther Rolle and John Amos had agreed upon. James Evans was killed in a car accident (prompting the famous line "Damn, damn, damn", and Rolle left voluntarily later on, finally fed up with the direction of the show. The show began to flounder, and Florida returned (after much negotiation), but it was too late. Still, for five years, people tuned in weekly to laugh, cry and sometimes utter an empathetic Mmhhmmm with America's favorite project family.
